Dear Mrs Boutilier:
For my capstone project my friend Selma Mrkaljevic and I are working together to help a refugee family from Syria. They arrived last December through a catholic charity and are still struggling. They are a family of 10 including a baby on the way. They all live in a house located in New Britain, CT. At the moment they are receiving help from the state but not for long. We are in the process of setting up a fundraiser to raise money for the family, helping the children with homework, creating activities for the children, collecting donations and giving transportation when needed. We choose to do this because we can both can relate to what they are going through. Both of our parents came with little to no money and were unfamiliar with the culture and language. We wanted to be able to give that support and help that our parents once received to get to where they are now.
My research is: How will America’s change in policy regarding immigration and refugees impact those seeking asylum across the world? This question relates to my project because the Marri family came to America through an organization almost a year ago when Barack Obama was president. Since Donald Trump has become president he signed off an executive order suspending the entry of Syrian refugees which was removed soon after. Artifacts I will be collecting are pictures of the family, fundraisers, donations, and emails/texts.
My mentor is Amela Sulejmanovic and she has experience in helping Syrian refugees through a program at her school at CCSU. Two obstacles I will face is communicating with the family on my own and setting up a fundraiser to raise money. I feel Amela will play a big role in this because she has already collected donations and raised money for many families in need. My learning stretch will be working on my communication skills with the family and time management.
Sincerely,
Elma Ahmetovic
