It’s the day before school and all I can think about is Capstone. I have no idea what I want to do. Most of my friends do and some have already started their capstone! I don’t want to fall behind. One thing I know is that I will be working with my friend Selma Mrkaljevic. We have brainstormed many ideas but have not decided on one just yet. We either want to volunteer and help animals, volunteer at a shelter, or help raise money for kids in need.
August 29, 2017
Today I had my first capstone class. Mrs. Zamorski was really nice and asked us if we had any ideas. Ofcourse I stood quiet and allowed the other students to volunteer to share their ideas. I hoped something would spark after listening to many of the students and their ideas. Unfortunently it didn't I was right back where I started. I had a conversation with Selma and we talked about how we need to come up with an idea and follow through with it. After throwing ideas back and forth we finally decided to continue Sana's Capstone. She only was able to help a family for a short period until they had to move. We wanted to find a family where we could help throughout capstone and after.
August 30, 2017
Our capstone idea is to contact a refugee family from Syria preferably in CT and to not only raise money but ask our community, mosque, and school to donate clothes and toys for adults/children. The clothes that get donated and are too small or too big for the family we plan on putting in a box and shipping it to Syria for those who can't escape the War and have lost everything. We were also hoping to collect hygiene products from our community, mosque, and school as well.
September 2, 2017
Our idea was great but our biggest problem was finding a family to get in contact with. Selma had found an organization called IRIS which is located in New Haven but the process would take too long and was complicated. You have to apply on their website and then you wait to find out if you’re accepted or not. We wanted to start right away and somewhere close so that was a fail.
September 3, 2017
I was working and my friend and I had a conversation about college and then I asked her for help with my capstone. She said she knew of a syrian family in need of help and asked if I was interested in making that our capstone. She knew someone that was in contact with a Syrian family and I was so glad because I had been stressing about this for a couple days. My friends name is Amela, She attends CCSU and they had a recent visit from a Syrian family that they helped so she sent a text to her friend which gave her the facebook of the women in connect with a Syrian family. After Amela briefly told the women our idea she gave her number and Amela gave it to me. We plan on contacting her in a couple days because she still is currently on vacation and I'm unsure we she is suppose to come back.
September 5, 2017
Even though we know very little about the family Mckay has already gave us bags of little girl clothes that we can give to the family. We really hope they have a little girl but if not we will donate them to someone who really needs them. My whole family has already been going through their things and creating bags to give to me after learning about my project. I am very excited to meet the family and learn more about them. We will be contacting the women soon.
September 6, 2017
Selma and I typed up our entire idea and got it approved by Mrs.Zamorski. We sent it in a group chat and received a quick reply, the lady was happy to learn of our interest but she said she won't be back until the September 12. Now we just have to wait until she gets back in order to meet her and the family.
September 10, 2017
My grandma and my mom have already loaded my car with clothing, toys, dishes, and home decor. I am so excited to look through everything and organize the donations with selma to give to the family. In two days we will contact the translator Ghoufran to set up a meeting. I am so excited to meet the family.
September 12, 2017
Selma and I have contacted Ghoufran again and she replied very quickly setting up a meeting tomorrow with the family and her in New Britain. I hope they have little kids because most of the clothes are for a little girl and boy.
September 13, 2017
Today Selma and I met up at the family's home in New Britain and learned so much! Both Selma and I were so nervous, we arrived at the house and Ghoufran was already outside waiting for us to welcome us. She was so nice. Once we introduced ourselves she invited us into the house and only the father and their youngest son were home. The other kids were in school and the mother was at a doctor's appointment. The father didn't know english but thanks to Ghoufran she translated for us the whole visit. Once the mother arrived we all sat in the living room and talked to get to know each other. She was very welcoming, right away she filled the table with food for us and constantly said “eat, eat, eat”. We learned that the family escaped Syria and moved to Turkey where they lived 5 years in a tent and their children received very little education. They got help and settled in America last December, so it’s going to be almost a year. The Father’s name is Muhammad Marri and his wife is Aisha Al Tablib Marri. They have 7 kids and one on the way! I was so shocked when Ghoufran told me the mother was expecting because they already have so many kids. Their names are Ahmed, Wiaam, Muna, Mahmoud, Suhaib, Ahid, and Aamina. The mom is only 4 months into her pregnancy and the sex is still unknown. But in the next week or so we should know the sex of the baby! The family is Muslim and the mother and her two oldest girls are covered. For religious reasons they do not eat pork or beef. The entire family is so nice and welcoming. Our biggest struggle is communication. The mother knows little to no english and the father is currently taking english classes and is eager to learn the language. To help us communicate Muhammad learned how to use google translate on his phone and we do the same to communicate back. This is only the case when Ghoufran Allababidi is unavailable to come with us to visit the family. She got us in contact with them and also happens to work as a translator. Both parents are unemployed and are receiving help from the Catholic Church and Salvation Army. They also get food stamps and WWIC which helps them out with the food situation. Ghoufran asked us to take Aisha to the grocery store tomorrow, we agreed and decided to leave but they insisted us to stay but it was getting late.
September 14, 2017
Today Selma and I went to go pick up Aisha to take her to the grocery store but her husband wasn't home yet, he was at school learning english. So we waited and of course Aisha brought out so much food and tea. It’s about of their culture to make sure their guests are feed. So I know to come hungry every time we visit. She also is a very good cook she makes everything. She even showed us pictures of the foods she has made, they all look delicious! As we waited we took a few pictures with and of the two youngest kids. They are so cute, we let them watch cartoons on our phones and they were so happy. Muhammed finally arrived with his english teacher and he showed us the books that he was reading. He was making great progress, I was impressed by how much he learned in only one day! He started to read to us and it made me so happy to see him happy. Even though he has a hip problem he still wants to find work to be able to support his family and he knows learning english plays a big factor in this. We sat and communicated through google translate for a little. Then Aisha got ready and Selma drove to Price Rite which was just down the street. Aisha filled the cart and we felt bad because it was heavy so selma offered to push it while Aisha shopped. We ran into a Syrian woman who thanked us for helping Aisha because she understood her struggles. Once Aisha got everything she needed we checked out and out everything in the trunk. We arrived to the house and helped unload the car and her children helped as well. After everything was in the house we left home.
September 18, 2017
Today I got in contact with Amela Sulejmanovic again to thank her for getting me in contact with Ghoufran. I updated her on what we have accomplished, learned, and have planned. I also asked her if she would like to be my mentor and she agreed! I was so happy because I thought I would never find one. She thought my whole project was awesome and would love to be my mentor. I thought she would best fit because of her experience in volunteering and giving back as well as past experience with Syrian families. Now I just plan to update her once a week and ask for advice and her opinion.
September 20, 2017
As we update our parents on our progress they want to help and get involved as well. Today Selma and I drove my aunt to give the Marri family donations in person. Unfortunately the family wasn’t home, we contacted Ghoufran and Muhammed but got no response. We decided to wait outside in the car for a little to see if they would show up but no one did. We decided to leave the donations in the back porch near their door. So when they did come home they would see them and take them. Once I got home Ghoufran apologized that she didn’t reply because her phone had died and she took the family to New York but told us that the family did find the donations we had left. Which was a relief because we were scared someone would have taken them. We still have all the donations in Selma's basement from both our friends and family members, which we plan to give to them next week.
September 28, 2017
Today is the day we finally take all the donations we have received throughout the last few weeks and bring them to the family. We contacted Ghoufran and she is aware of our visit and can’t wait to see us. While they were at a doctors appointment Selma and I went to Walmart to buy tape to tape all of the boxes. After a couple of trips up and down her basement stairs we finally put all the donations in both of our cars. We headed to the families house and once we arrived they still weren’t home from their appointment. We texted Ghoufran and she told us she was just a minute away. Once they arrived everyone helped unload the car and brought all the boxes through their back door. Once we finished we went inside to talk and we already knew Aisha was bringing food out. But they thanked us numerously for the donations so we asked them to take a few pictures. Since we couldn't stay long we asked Ghoufran to take a picture of the entire family so I could set up a gofundme page. We sat for about 15 minutes and learned that the youngest boy, Ahmed has been diagnosed with lead poisoning. The doctors told Aisha it could be from the old house or maybe from his toys. Aisha has to stop breastfeeding him now. They also are worried that the unborn baby could have lead poisoning as well. Communication was really easy that day because Ghoufran was there and the little ones have become more comfortable with us, they smile more and always wave goodbye when we leave.
October 2, 2017
Today Selma and I set up the gofundme page for the Marri family. We gave a brief description of who we are, what we are doing, and why we are doing it. We also set our goal to $3,000. Since I doubt have facebook Selma shared the link on her facebook page and I shared the link on my twitter page. We both posted on Instagram and we were so amazed that we raised $960 just in 24 hours! We thanked everyone who had donated! Some even commented if we were in need of baby clothes to contact them. Which was very nice.
October 5, 2017
One girl who donated named Belma came by my house to give me clothes for the older girls which was very generous of her! Our goal is to raise $1,000 on the gofundme page and then ask our close family if they would like to donate. We are certain we will raise $3,000 by the end of October.
October 7, 2017
Something the family still needs is personal hygiene. That’s something the state does not take care of. A women named Admira contacted Selma through facebook and asked her what we needed besides moneys and she told her clothes and personal hygiene. Later today she stopped by Selma's house and gave us a whole box of personal hygiene products and another with clothes. Also the father is in need of clothes but no one has donated anything in his size. I plan to go and buy him some shirts and pants. On the other hand we finally raised over $1,000 and couldn’t have done it without the support of our friends on social media. Thankful to all those who shared our link and story.
October 15, 2017
Ghoufran texted me today asking if Selma and I wanted to have dinner at the Marri household. We agreed, sometimes it is very hard to visit the family at least once a week. Selma and I both work and have school assignments to complete but the family is very understanding about it. When we arrived at the Marri’s house we went inside and there was a couple from the Catholic church who has been there for them since their arrival. We talked a little with them to get to know each other. Shortly after we arrived Ghoufrans husband had too. Ghoufran had a meeting so she couldn’t attend but her husband helped to translate the whole night. Aisha had spent hours cooking with the help of her oldest daughters, she filled the whole table with their traditional food. I was excited and nervous to eat because I was trying something new and I was scared I wouldn’t like their food. Overall the food pretty good I really liked how she cooked and seasoned her chicken. There were some foods that I didn’t try but that’s because I’m just picky. Aisha ended up packing us some food to bring home so our family can try too. We had told them how we raised over $1000 for the family and they were all so happy. After dinner we sat a little bit more listening and engaging in the conversations. Aisha brought out again a whole table full of fruit, she offered to make tea or coffee for us. I could not eat anything anymore; I was so full my stomach started hurting. I took a lot of pictures of the kids and the table full of food before we ate. When it was time for us to leave we said our goodbyes to the family and left.
October 16, 2017
A man by the name of Stan contacted Selma through text asking if we would be able to help the kids with homework. Of course we agreed but with both of our working schedules it is hard to find a day we can go every week. He told Selma that Muna needs help with her homework the most and that he helps her on Thursdays. Selma asked if he helps the other kids too but he told her only Muna ever asks him for help. Selma and I try to go every Wednesday to see them. We plan on asking the other kids if they need help with their homework also. Stan didn’t specify on what Muna needed help on, so we will have to find that out too next week. I know the kids are so behind in their grade levels and that they have a hard time even multiplying or adding so I hope Selma and I could help them understand the difference.
October 25, 2017
Today we went again to the Marri household, our reason for going this time was to help Muna and the other kids with homework but of course we never just go for one thing. Aisha again cooked a whole table full of food for us to eat. Ghoufran and her husband were also there too with their kids. They have triplet girls and two boys! We also transferred the money into Ghoufrans husband bank account. When he receives the money he will then transfer it to the Marris bank account. I was so mad; GoFundMe took 90 dollars just because we were transferring it to someone’s else’s bank account. Neither Selma or I are over 18 so we can’t put it in our own. I will be keeping in contact with Ghoufran to see when they will receive the money. Helping the children with homework was quite a success, the only one who needed help was Muna. The other kids kept saying “no” when we asked. I helped Muna and she has became more open with me and not as shy as she was before. Selma played blocks with the younger children, they make something then they break it down and then they would build again. We repeated this process about 10 times before I had to leave. I also took more pictures of the children when Selma was playing with them.
October 30, 2017
I texted Ghoufran and asked if they received the money yet and she said they didn’t yet. How long is the process supposed to take? It’s annoying how they took $90 so fast but they’re taking so long to actually give the money to the people who need it.
November 12, 2017
Selma and I were talking about how we need to visit the family soon but we’ve been so busy with school, work, and everything about this college process. She texted Ghoufran asking if they got the money and she said they still have not! We are planning to try to contact GoFundMe and see what is happening with the money tomorrow during capstone.
November 22, 2017
Today we went to meet up with Wail and Ghoufran to discuss about the gofundme page and what the problem might be. We are all concerned about the money that is put on hold and why we can not get access to it. We thought we had solved the problem but something was still wrong. You’d think the process would we easier but this has been very difficult. I’m so upset and don’t know what to do. We had dinner with the family and continued to learn about their culture and their food. I told Ghoufran and Wail that I would talk to someone about the issue and get back to them.
November 27, 2017
Today I went to meet Mrs. Bout and to seek her help. I told her the issue and how It’s been a while since we had raised all the money. She was just as worried as I was. We went through the process of giving a beneficiary access to the money and recalling if I had done all the steps correctly. We then figured out that I had never made Wail a beneficiary account so the money was just sitting there on hold. I had later on sent Ghoufran a text telling her I had figured out the problem. We had made plans to meet on the 14th of next month to clear up the confusion.
December 14, 2017
I arrived to the Marris house and waited on Selma. We had created a beneficiary account for Wail since he is someone that helps the Marris since their arrival and pays their bills. After we set up his account there was still a hold on both of our gofundme accounts. I hoped it would just go away once they had seen I created him an account but it did not. On Wail’s account it says the money will transfer to his bank account in about a week. I still had a bad feeling it wouldn’t. When I had created my account it told me the same thing so we left it alone and ate lunch. Once I got home I emailed the management team and they emailed me back telling me they had reviewed my account and lifted the hold. I guess they just wanted to make sure the money was going to who I had said it would. I texted Ghoufran telling her to tell her husband that he should expect the money in the next week.
December 22, 2017
After a couple months of confusion I can finally say the money has been transferred into Wail’s account. In the morning he went and cashed exactly how much was donated and asked Selma and I to be present when he gave them the cash. He figured cash would be better and they could decide how to spend it and save it. Selma and I came over and took pictures of the family and the money. Aisha had made food and the kids weren’t home yet but we had to go. Aisha packed us togo plates and Muhammad went to practice driving with a woman named Jackie. They were so grateful and they showed a sign of relief because they are in a difficult situation. It made me happy my community, family, and I made a difference even so small. I am just so glad to finally get this off my chest and not to be worried anymore. I’m glad I went to talk to Mrs. Bout and emailed the gofundme team instead of giving up. Once he gave the money to the Marris, Aisha gave us a hug and said thank you while Muhammed shook our hand and said thanks. We learned a few new things since the last time we saw them. Muhammed is actually in the process of obtaining his permit for him to drive, a lady by the name Jackie was there who took him to a parking lot so he can practice. She said he was getting the hang of it, I feel the most difficult part for him would be the actual test and not the driving part. He has to know the rules of the road fully to pass the test. Aisha is due in March so that should be exciting when we go to visit her. Although we already knew about this before, it’s still exciting to know that she would deliver a baby while we are helping them also. The two youngest kids were there but the rest were in school so we didn’t end up seeing the older kids. We had tea and some fruit before we left home.
January 3, 2018
It feels like I haven’t seen the family in forever, Selma and I both feel guilty about this. Sometimes I feel like I'm making excuses. Currently Ghoufran is out in the middle east for a month so there is no one to meet up with us at the family’s house. We still struggle to communicate with the family which is why her presence is useful. Her husband is there sometimes but he has work and takes care of his 5 kids so our schedules don’t correspond with one another. Ghoufran should be back in about a week and a half, I'm excited to hear about her experience.
January 20, 2018
While I do know my project is almost complete the talk about making our websites is making me nervous. I want to take my time when creating my website. This also means that May is just around the corner so are our presentations. One thing that concerned both Selma and I recently is how we might not be able to put pictures of the family up in our artifacts section of the website. We need to get consent from the family, but Selma is going to go talk to Bout about what exactly a consent form looks like. I really hope they allow us to use their photos, it would be a huge part missing from my capstone.
January 25, 2018
I work two jobs and it has been so hard for me to find time to go see the family. Even though we have helped them in many ways I still feel like it's not enough so we will be finally going to see the Marris on the 28th! We texted Ghoufran but she hasn’t replied to us yet so we are just going to stop by the house. I hope they're home because we have received a few donations we had gotten to give the family that has just been sitting in our cars. We told them whatever items they don’t like to give to someone else who is in need since Ghoufran knows a lot of families.
January 28, 2018
Today Selma and I discussed how to write the consent form after she visited Mrs. Bout. We just wrote a simple consent form stating they will give us permission to use pictures of them on our website. Our visit today had touched my heart. Ghoufran was over and then later on came a lady named Jackie who went with Ghoufran to her trip to Palestine. Ghoufran was telling us all about it and showed us a pictures. Jackie created a video of the refugee camps that they visited on their trip. With music playing in the background. As soon as I looked over at Aisha I started to tear up. The video reminded me of the ones made from the War in Bosnia and all the pictures. I just thought to myself how could anyone kill thousands of innocent lives for power? I ask this whenever I turn on the news, what is power without the support of your people? Nothing so logically why do things that will turn your people against you. This topic makes me so upset and angry!!! I felt so bad for Aisha she obviously was having flashbacks over her years in the camp and running away trying to save her life. There was 80,000 refugees just in that camp they had visited. There are only two obgyn doctors and one dentist for all those people. I was so in Shock when Ghoufran told me this. On the bright side Ghoufran asked the family if we had their consent for the photos and they agreed to it, I'm glad to be able to physically show people how I have helped the Marri's. During todays visit Jackie mentioned how she's planning a surprise baby shower for Aisha. Selma and I got excited we couldn't wait for the baby to arrive. We agreed on the date and asked what is something Aisha really needs for the baby, of course they said diapers which is understandable because they are expensive and go quickly.
February 12, 2018
Today right after school Selma and I went to eat because we were starving and after we went to stop and shop to get diapers, wipes, baby shampoo, and baby lotion. I bought 2 boxes of diapers, shampoo, wipes,, and the lotion. Selma bought the same things as me. After that I put in the address to where Jackie lives and selma followed me, it was about a 20 minute drive to Bolton. When we first got there, I didn’t expect to see so many cars and people. There were members from different catholic churches all gathered for Aisha. When I came in I introduced myself to them and vice versa. Ghoufran and Aisha were running a little late but when they showed up they had Aisha repeat everyone’s name as they introduced themselves to help her with her English. After that we had Aisha open all the gifts that everyone brought to her. She got clothes, diapers, wipes, socks, blankets, and money. While she was opening the gifts, you could tell how happy she was it was little she had a little relief lifted off her shoulders. Her other kids didn’t have the opportunity to have all of this but since she moved here, people have been helping them. While she was unwrapping the presents Jackie says to her "No more kids after this" and Aisha laughed and said that's it. I today made her really happy and is enough for the baby. She's not used to having a lot and you can tell she's isn't selfish and is very appreciative. Selma and I helped serve the cake and drinks to everyone since we were the youngest. Everyone would confuse the two of us but we were used to it even though we aren't related we do have similar features and names. After finishing the cake and just sitting and talking everyone slowly started to leave which is when we left too. I took lots of pictures to have on my website and had Ghoufran sign my field work log.
February 20, 2018
I have to say creating the capstone website is quite frustrating. But I found myself taking time with it because it isn't something that can be completed in a day. Even though I want to just finish it in one day it's not possible. Today I texted Ghoufran asking her how everything is. I know that Aisha's due the first week of March. She said the doctors told them everything is good and now we just wait. I can’t wait for the baby to arrive because babies just bring happiness and they need a little of that. Ghoufran and I always keep in contact about the family. I wonder how Ahmed who is the youngest is going to react when all the attention is on the New baby.
February 28, 2018
We texted Ghoufran if there were any updates on Aisha but all she told us is that they went to the doctor today and everything was the same. The doctor said everything's good and all we can do is wait. She is due in the next few days so I hope everything goes well with her delivery because it is her first time delivering in America in a hospital.
March 5, 2018
Ghoufran texted Selma and I today and told us Aisha went into labor and delivered a baby girl. Her name is Yumna Marri, she weighed 7.4 pounds and is 19 inches long. She also sent us a picture of Yumna and she is so precious. I can't wait to go visit and hold the baby!
March 9, 2018
We finally went to see the family again today and also the newest edition to the Marri family!!! When we came in the house, Aisha was in another room breastfeeding but then she came over to the living room and greeted us. She let me hold the baby and take pictures of her. They baby didn't even cry just looked at me with her big eyes and fell asleep. It was so soothing watching her. I also asked Aisha how was she feeling and she said she felt okay. After sitting down and talking a little Aisha had Muna bring us some cookies and fruits to eat. We asked the children if they need help with their homework. Muna was the first one to come and ask help with her math homework. After Selma and I helped her Mahmooud told us he needs help too. While Selma helped him with his worksheet I asked the girls if they had any books I could read to them. At first I started reading and pointing at the pictures that's when I noticed Wiaam was repeating everything I said. So I decided to have Muna read first and then Wiaam they took turns and when they got stuck I helped them sound the words out. I can tell their biggest struggle is reading but they can communicate pretty well in english with me. I noticed that Mahmooud was listening while I read and payed attention but was also very shy when it came to reading. He said it wasn’t his strong suit we told him the next time we come over, he would read. I honestly feel like it takes time. You can't live in a country for a year and become fluent in the language and be able to read and write. Even after capstone's done I still want to be there for the family and help them in any way that I can. I love to see the process and the change. Wiaam, the third youngest child already knows so much English. I put on a video for her to watch to learn the colors and how to say them. She picked up so quickly! Im so proud of all of them but especially for her because it'll be easier on her when she attends school next year. I have a video of her singing the ABC’s, I was shocked at how she remembered them at such a young age. As we were talking with the kids I asked Mahmooud what he wanted to be when he got older he told us he wanted to become a surgeon and save lives. I loved that I later informed him it's a lot of work and schooling but I believed in him. He told us he has a uncle in Syria who's a doctor which played a part in hiss decision. All the girls said they didn't like science so they wanted to go into the business field. During our visit Muhammed was actually taking his 8 hour drug and alcohol class for his license so he came home right before we left. I feel like he has came such a long way since the first time we meet him. He is very determined, currently he has been taking english classes, practicing how to drive with Jackie, got his permit, and took the 8 hour class. He is always practicing his English which has improved a lot. Once he gets his license Ghoufran will help get them their first car which will be exciting. As soon as he gets his license he will also look for a job, he wants to be able to provide for his family. Also Ghoufran wasn’t there today but we hope to see her next time we come.
March 19, 2018
Today I was thinking to myself how fast capstone and senior year has flew by! I am very proud of myself and all that I have accomplished personally and capstone wise this year. I'm nervous even thinking about presenting on May 18th... I also emailed my mentor today asking if she could write me a Testimony and send it to Bout.
March 16, 2018- After building a connection with the family I don't want to stop helping them. I want to continue to stay in contact with them and help them in any way I can.
