medical to business
Ever since I was a little girl I have always wanted to be a doctor. Of Course then I did not know what I do now. As a child you always thought you were limited to either becoming a doctor, police officer, teacher, or firefighter. Now the possibilities are endless. Recently I have taken a marketing class that has opened my eyes and conflicted my feelings about what I want to do with my life. As we all know the business and medical field are absolutely two different fields. So I took the opportunity to shadow a few different medical majors at the Children's Medical Center in Hartford with my school. One thing I do know is that I love to help people, but maybe not diagnose them. Throughout the Tour I learned a lot about the different positions, salary, and hours. Honestly it just wasn't something I saw myself doing. I don't want to go to college and stress to become a doctor, I want to go to become successful doing something I enjoy. After the job shadow I was certain business was for me. As a junior I took a Marketing class that I really enjoyed. We got to create our own business and present in front of judges. I thought it was a wonderful experience!
Summer came around and the thought of Senior year and college was stressing me out. I decided to Job shadow someone in the business field. Which is when I got into contact with a man named Serif Huric. Serif is a Unit Manager at Travelers in Hartford. I set up a day that worked for both of us and noticed as he greeted me and started showing me around one of the first things he did was say "Good Morning" and talked to each of his workers. I respected him even more because it showed that even though he is the Manager he still respects the people who work for him. I also liked how he had his own office which is something I have always wanted. He works for an Insurance company and some of his job requirements is to talk to clients on the phone, fill out paperwork, and work on the computer. He is also able to make his schedule so it works for him and his family. I learned a lot throughout our meeting about his job and Serif himself. I know he graduated with a degree in Finance which is what I plan to do. He was working for someone at Travelers and after a while he applied for the Management position. His salary is around $70 to $80,000. I had asked him what would it take for me to get to where he is and he told me to take advantage the spare time I have in college and get an internship. I plan on doing exactly that. He had said that without experience your degree is useless. He's right no company will hire me unless I have experience and it's better to start early. After listening to Serif I saw myself sitting in his chair and I thought to myself this is what I want to do.
After the Job shadow and my marketing class I knew that I wanted to go into Business. I really liked the idea of being my own boss. I started to research different fields and their salary. Finally I decided to choose a program at Uconn to major in Finance and get my masters all in five years. Freshmen year I plan to intern at Travelers and once I get my degree in Finance I hope to get a bigger position at Travelers.
